Nursing Show Reaches 100,000th Podcast Download

November 19th, 2008 by podmedic

The Nursing Show (NursingShow.com), part of the MedicCast Network, reached its 100,000th pair of ears this week.  At the same time the shows of the MedicCast Network collectively crossed the half million mark! The network is one of the top medical content providers online, independent of large media publishers and special interest groups.  MedicCast Network programming is focused on the medical professionals and students in a variety of fields and reaches audiences worldwide.

Medical Training and Information in a Tight Job Market

Despite the recession surrounding the rest of the job market, the health services market is booming.  Thousands begin training each year to fill voids in the health care job market as nurses, paramedics, and emergency medical technicians.  Each of these individuals struggles with learning a the difficult skills of a trained medical professional, many while maintaining families and working other jobs.  There was a need for some way to educate and motivate these people to continue working towards their goals.  Many turned to online resources as a way to supplement their education.

The Network started with the MedicCast podcast for EMTs and paramedics. Since its first episode launched in February of 2006, the MedicCast podcast has striven to reach the emergency medical community with quality medical news and tips for the EMS provider.  Since then, along with sister programs like the Nursing Show and MedicCast News, the MedicCast Network has attracted new advertisers to the online space and is planning strategies for partners in 2009.

Each week’s free episodes feature news and commentary for their focused audiences.  The listeners also receive a weekly tip or procedural review aimed at refreshing knowledge and reviewing techniques.  Many subscribers are students in their respective fields and use the weekly updates as study aids and test preparation tools.  Listeners are able to tune in online using any web browser, download and listen on their mp3 players, or burn the episodes to a CD.  “One of the advantages for busy professionals is the way the show provide the audience a way to listen on their own schedule: in the car, around the house, or doing chores,” says host and MedicCast founder, Jamie Davis, the Podmedic.

About the Host, Jamie Davis, the Podmedic

Jamie Davis is a registered nurse, a licensed paramedic, and has training in broadcast audio and video production.  In 2005, he began recording programs for himself as a study aid and for refresher training.  He quickly realized that others would benefit from his tactics.  Since then, he has made acquaintances around the world and has interviewed leaders and innovators in a variety of health fields.  In addition to his role as host of the network’s programs, Jamie is also a nationally recognized speaker on the use of new media tools for higher education.

The programs in the network include the Nursing Show, The MedicCast, and the MedicCast News.  The Nursing Show a program for nurses, by nurses reaches out to nurses, nursing students, and educators with focused tips, medication and procedure reviews just for today’s busy nursing professional.  The MedicCast is a weekly program for EMTs and paramedics with consistently high ratings in online podcast directories like iTunes.  The MedicCast News is a short news program produced in the middle of the week and is found at the Podcaster News Network.

Numbers on Teen Smoking Stable with No Decline in Sight

November 19th, 2008 by podmedic

Teen Smoking Too High

A recent report from the Centers for Disease Control (CDC.gov) estimates that 20 percent of American high school students smoke cigarettes.  These numbers are static in recent years and the lack of a decline alarms health care officials.

This article from CNN Health cites the lack of resources focused on teens as part of the problem.  While adults have a host of avenues to quit smoking, teens are left without focused treatment programs to assist them with kicking the habit.

Other roadblocks for teens is that many of them are too young to legally smoke and they may worry about coming forward to join a class or support group.  Will it get them in trouble with their parents or the law?

Do you know a teen smoker?  Check out the excellent resources available at the American Lung Association.  Check out their smoking cessation fact sheet linked above and other links on that site for more information and resources.

Nurse Smoking Study Reveals Dangers

Smoking is now seen to have even more of an impact on longevity.  A recent study by UCLA on data from the landmark Nurses’ Health Study found the numbers surrounding the mortality rates across the age groups for nurses who currently smoked significantly higher.  Some age groups showed mortality rates two times the rates of non-smoker nurses.

The Nurses’ Health Study was initiated in the 1970s with bi-annual surveys of more than 200,000 nurses and is considered one of the primary sources of women’s health research in the world.

Nurses, Long Hours, and Avoiding Medication Errors

November 18th, 2008 by podmedic

Avoid Medication Errors

All medical providers, whether they work in a hospital or in a prehospital setting, constantly fight to avoid medication errors.  The Joint Commission responsible for hospital oversight considers medication errors one of the biggest problems affecting patient safety.

Yet for those of us who work long hours, particularly those working 12 hour shifts overnight and with shorthanded staffing, medication errors are even more difficult to avoid.  Fatigue, lack of focus and concentration, and increased workload all lend to the reasons busy field providers make mistakes.  How do we make ourselves pay attention?

How Focus and Attention Work

This article from CNN Health looks at how me maintain attention span and gives tips on how to train our brains to pay better attention and focus when needed. The authors point out a few ideas on how to maintain better focus.  Some will work for busy nurses and some won’t, but all of them bear a closer look.

  • Get More Sleep - Hard to do when you work long hours but when weighed against the expense of losing not only your job, but possibly your career in the current marketplace, it might be a good idea to refocus some free time to power naps and a good night’s sleep on days off.
  • Manage Stress and Anger - We’ll be talking about stress management in December’s MedicCast Live podcast, but we all need to plan ways to deal with stress in our lives.  It’s hard to focus on a difficult-to-treat patient when we are worried about a fight with a spouse or a problem with a co-worker.  Learn to recognize stress reactions in yourself and make time for a brisk walk or some time on the treadmill or stairmaster.  Talk with a work counselor or supervisor about some assistance before it gets out of hand.

Read the article for more ideas and links on stress and tune in and join us live on Tuesday, December 9, 2008 at 10 PM ET for the next MedicCast Live episode.

What are your thoughts on dealing with stress, fatigue and attention span?  Share them with the rest of the Nursing Show community by clicking the comments link below and leaving your ideas here.

On Healthcare Reform and Little Hope for Change

November 15th, 2008 by admin

In his recent post of Grand Rounds, the author of the “Musings of a Distractible Mind” blog posted some interesting links to some advice for the recent winner of the U.S. presidential election.

I think his points are right on the money and along the way, you can check out his links to other bloggers that are included in his advice.  A great way to do Grand Rounds, Sir!

I tip my cap to you!

I wonder what the rest of you think?  I happen to believe that the system is going to have to completely fail (yes, worse than it is now!) before the nation is willing to accept the pain of widespread change.  Third party billing is breaking the country from the inside, but:

  • The well-off don’t want to give up the access to health care they now have
  • The insurance companies would rather bankrupt the nation than fail to turn a profit
  • The healthcare work force can’t agree or mobilize to offer their own plan of choice
  • The pharmaceutical giants won’t give up their stranglehold on obscene profits
  • And, Joe public simply believes anything he is told that triggers a fear response

Stay tuned here and over at the Nursing Show blog for a rant on why we deserve what we get!  In the meantime, I hope Obama can enact some kind of meaningful change.  I really do!  I just don’t think he will get far past the phat cats and entrenched political influence the healthcare business industry has in Washington.

Your Personal Nursing Look and Style is Worth $50

November 13th, 2008 by podmedic

One of our sponsors here on the Nursing Show, Lydia’s Uniforms has a great program that offers $50 in free merchandise to site visitors for writing about their personal scrubs look and style.

First off, this isn’t a paid blog post.  I just think this is a great idea.  How do we personalize our look?

  • Colors (that’s easy)
  • Pins
  • Stethoscope Sleeves/Covers
  • Caps
  • Seasonal Prints
  • Equipment in every pocket (for the guys)

These are my ideas.  What are yours?  Check out the blog over at Lydia’s Uniforms for more ideas on personalizing your look.  While you’re at it, send in your ideas and maybe you’ll become a blog editor at large and win $50 from Lydia’s.
