A new spray on liquid bandage with similarities to others already on the market has been cleared for marketing.  The product, called Gel-Spray Liquid Bandage, sprays a stream of two polymers that combine to form a gel that forms over the wound area.

The scientists from Rutgers University who developed the Gel-Spray product say it is perfect for use in combat situations where a wounded soldier can use it on injuries until other help arrives.

The product was developed in association with a Georgia company, BioCure, who will handle marketing of the product.

Acute Myocardial Infarction patients need to get to the closest hospital catheterization lab. It offers them the best chance to restore heart muscle perfusion rapidly and stop an impending arrest. But catheterization is only a partial cure. Many arteries begin to close up again and a coronary artery bypass grafts are the next choice of treatment.But in CABG, the arteries for the grafts must come from the patient’s lower limb collateral arteries. In elderly patients with reduced circulation, this can cause other complications and localized edema. What is really needed is a ready supply of donated or synthetic bypass graft materials.

This article over at Medical News Today points to a promising advance towards creating engineered bypass grafts that would have wide applications in the medical arena. Treatments for stroke, AMI, traumatic injuries and more lie at the other end of research like this. I like reporting on research like this because it means that we will have more tools to keep our patients alive longer. And not just a longer life, but a life with higher quality.
