Caffeine and Diabetes

February 4th, 2008 by podmedic

donut_jones.jpgA report in the journal Diabetes Care looks at the effects of caffeine consumption on patients with diabetes.  I found the article on this here.

It looks at more evidence on just how powerful a drug caffeine can be.  Researchers tested a small group of people over 72 hours with a continuous blood sugar monitoring device implanted subcutaneously.

After giving the subjects a dose of caffeine equal to four cups of coffee, they watched blood sugar levels throughout the day.  An average increase in blood sugar of 8 percent was noted with peak increases noted just after meals.

Authors caution that they have no explanation for how caffeine directly affects blood sugar but wonder if it may have something to do with increased adrenaline release or perhaps a chemical inhibitory effect on glucose uptake by the body’s cells.

New Hyperbilirubinemia Tests

January 12th, 2008 by admin

nurse_baby_assessment_sm.jpgWith neo-natal hyperbilirubinemia a rather common occurrence, it would be nice to be able to definitively predict which newborns will present with this problem or not. The alternative until now has been to monitor carefully in the nursery and try to educate parents on what to watch for until the 1 week pediatric visit (if they will show up).

This article over at Medical News Today offers hope for a real alternative to this dilemma. The Children’s Hospital of Philadelphia researchers in this study of more than 800 newborns found that a review of the pre-discharge bilirubin level charted against the gestational age provided a good predictor of the likelihood of the baby needing to remain in hospital for hyperbilirubinemia treatment. Check out the article for the full details.

A tool for making this determination has been needed for some time and will provide for better care for at risk infants who may not have access to good pediatric follow-up care once they leave the hospital.
